GDC – WAITEATA PARK
Native Concepts was contracted as part of the implementation of the Gisborne District Council’s Urban Streams project. Funded by both the Ministry of the Environment and GDC, this project seeks to transform our urban waterways.
Stabilising erosion-prone areas through riparian planting, absorbing stormwater contaminants, improving fish spawning habitats, and restoring the mauri of the waterways are some of the numerous objectives of this project. Planting sites have included Waiteata Park, Nelson Park, and the Matokitoki Stream – with important implications for community engagement and education. Involving the community in the planting effort, helps to raise awareness about the importance of ecological restoration and promotes a sense of connection and pride in the local environment.
