THE CONSULTING WE DO

We conduct comprehensive assessments on a variety of different project sites, farm stations and lifestyle blocks, considering factors such as soil quality, climate, and species suitability. Our team develops tailored planting plans that maximize the ecological and economic benefits with a focus on long-term sustainability for each project.

We offer extensive knowledge of native tree species, their growth characteristics, and their suitability for specific regions. We assist clients in selecting the most appropriate tree species for their goals, considering factors such as habitat restoration, urban greening, carbon sequestration or economic benefit. We also provide assistance with tree sourcing, ensuring the availability of high-quality native tree seedlings or saplings.

Ecology of Waterways

Recent extreme weather events have highlighted the need for serious focus on protecting waterways from slash and silt and mitigating future occurrences.

I did my M.Sc. thesis comparing the geo-morphology of rivers planted in pines compared to those in native plantings. I continued this work for the University thereafter, accumulating data to further my knowledge and to build a more practical and robust approach to the many challenges faced.

Since then I have undertaken a wide range of native plantings on waterways and farmlands in the Gisborne – Tairawhiti region and have absorbed a lot of knowledge of the eco-challenges that are being faced by farmers.

Planting trees and other vegetation along waterways helps to filter out pollutants and sediment, reducing the amount of harmful materials that enter those waterways. Additionally, planting vegetation can help to stabilize soil and prevent erosion, which will further improve water quality.

I have extensive experience, both academic and practical, and I’m truly committed to making a positive difference to the ecology of waterways and working closely with all those who share my passion to make a sustainable difference.

Farm Forestry Planning

I conduct comprehensive assessments of farm sites, considering factors such as soil conditions, climate, topography, and land use goals, developing tailored planting plans that align with the farm's objectives. Whether it's timber production, windbreak establishment, erosion control, wildlife habitat creation, or a combination of these, I take into account the specific needs of the farm and design plantings that optimise both ecological, agricultural and commercial benefits.

Recognising the potential for integrating trees with agricultural activities through agroforestry practices, guidance will be given on incorporating native tree plantings into farming systems. Whether it be riparian buffers, or shade-grown crops, optimal spacing or management practices that maximise the benefits of both trees and agricultural production, my team and I will be in support.

I take a holistic approach to farm forestry native plantings, considering the multiple benefits they can bring to the farm ecosystem, prioritising soil health, water quality, biodiversity conservation, and long-term sustainability in my recommendations; ensuring that native plantings contribute positively to the overall farm landscape.

Site Preparation and Management

Our team provides guidance on site preparation techniques, including spot spraying, weed control, and appropriate planting methods, which we can undertake on request. We offer recommendations and monitoring of the ongoing site management, including watering, weeding and maintenance practices to ensure the successful establishment and growth of native trees.

Mitigation of Dune Erosion

I have in-depth knowledge of coastal plant species and their abilities to withstand saltwater exposure, high winds and other challenging conditions. I can provide guidance on selecting the most suitable plant species for each site, considering factors such as root system strength, tolerance to saltwater spray and adaptability to changing sea levels.

For restoration of the Whangara dunes we used coconut matting in conjuction with native plantings, to great effect. This is a great approach to improving the health and stability of this important coastal ecosystem.

Roading and Highways

Roading and Highways should have low maintenance requirements and be able to withstand roadside stresses such as pollution, salt spray and limited soil fertility. I develop planting strategies that promote biodiversity, enhance ecological connectivity and provide visual interest along the roadways. Our team will happily undertake the necessary work.

I also recognise the importance of implementing effective erosion control measures and managing stormwater runoff along roads and highways.
